Legacies of Life/Our Stories

Our beautiful daughters have accepted Jesus as their Savior. If that is the only legacy my husband and I leave on the earth, it is enough. We are blessed. In our eternal perspective, leaving a legacy of loving Jesus and sharing His light is what our lives are about.

The very last verse in the great love chapter of 1 Corinthians 13 is this:

And now these three remain; faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13;13

During a stormy season in life, stuck in debt, worrying over a health crisis, whatever your needs are today, remember, faith and hope in Jesus are always available to us, as we are covered in His love. The greatest of all is love and that is what will follow us into heaven. Our faith will be realized and our hopes fulfilled as we step into heaven and meet Jesus face to face. The love we shared in His name will remain forever.

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know full even as I am fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12

We are children of the most-high God, forever written in the Lamb’s book of life. Nothing can erase it. Your sins are forgiven, past, present and future. We have freedom to live in truth and love. How then do we live?

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. Ephesians 5:8

Dear Jesus,

Faith, hope and love remain. Fill us with Your light as we live out the rest of our days. Give us courage to live out our faith and hope in You, as we share the love You first gave us.

Amen

Legacies of Life/Our Stories

I wrote this from the vantage point of my father-in-law many years ago, when he was dealing with the difficulty of seeing his wife in a nursing home. Maybe some of you understand how difficult it is to see a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

My Wife of 50 Years

I can’t find her in the place where she lives, my wife of 50 years, even though I try. I bring her clothes, make sure she’s clean and listen to the words I no longer understand. I can’t stay away and I can’t stay long.

I return to the home we shared, she and I, and there I find her, my wife of fifty years. I find her in the scent of the vanilla perfume sitting on the mirrored tray. I find her under the quilt she made, and I find her in the brush that I use on my fine, white hair; the brush she used each day trying to manage the hair that never stayed just right.

Her hair is the one thing that brings a rare smile as I say, “Honey, your hair looks pretty today.”

I guess when you worry and fuss about something your entire life you never forget, even in a mind almost gone. And so I chuckle a little and I sniff, and I snuggle and I brush trying to find her, my wife of 50 years.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Dear Father in Heaven,

Comfort those suffering today in their own bodies and minds or in dealing with the suffering of loved ones. You understand us even when we don’t. You know our hearts and we trust You with it all, until, one day, there will be no more suffering or tears or pain.

Amen

Legacies of Life/Our Stores

Fellowship with other Christians is deeper and richer than other relationships. Maybe it is because we know we will be spending eternity together! We all share the same Holy Spirit of God. There is a willingness to love, to encourage and to correct when necessary, a true unity. I witnessed a deep and abiding fellowship of friends in action over the span of 35 years.

I was part of a care ministry team, beginning in the early 1990’s. It was a big commitment, 50 hours of training, a two-year covenant to stay in the ministry, along with continuing education and ministry meetings twice a month. After the initial training, we would be paired with someone in crisis. The usual pattern was to set up weekly visits that could last for up to one year.

One of my first care receivers was very ill. She was expected to live for only about six months, as she suffered from congestive heart failure, lung disease and complete blindness. She lived for six years! I never did take a break from visiting her. In Christ’s economy, when you want to share in His name, He gives you blessings in abundance in return.

Over those years of visiting Marcia, I became familiar with her group of friends and grew to love all of them. (By the way this is a confidential ministry, but Marcia always introduced me around church as “my Stephen minister,” so I know she wouldn’t mind me sharing her story.)

Marcia’s group of friends had been a part of the same church community for several decades. They had taught Sunday School, raised their kids around the same time, and several had sorrowed together over the deaths of their husbands. They had studied the Bible together and this group of friends rallied around Marcia. They read to her, brought her food, gave her rides and encouraged her.

I know now that Marcia and her friends were a part of my training. I had no clue as to how to minister to anyone, even though my heart was in the right place. This group was gracious and kind and opened the Bible to me and opened their hearts to teach me and show me Jesus.

Marcia’s life had shrunk from a large house to an apartment, followed by a move to her son’s basement, and finally, to a nursing home and hospice. There came a day when we knew the time was near for her to go to heaven and this band of friends allowed me to tag along to say goodbye to our dear friend.

I said my goodbyes first and told Marcia all she had meant to me and all she had taught me about being physically burdened in ways I could not understand, yet still being able to show and share the joy of the Lord.

I sat at a table off to the side as her long-time friends circled her bed. They laughed and cried, shared memories and prayed. And then the sweetest sounds came from their lips as they sang hymn after hymn in beautiful harmony. After decades of sitting in church pews together, they could have gone on for days. It was a glimpse of heaven, like I imagine the angels singing. What a sweet remembrance.

There was something pure and lovely, and holy about that day. It was the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ at work in that room. The following verses speak to how the body of Christ can function. I witnessed the truth of these verses that day.

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.  Colossians 3:16

Dear Lord,

Thank you for the men and women of faith You place in our lives to teach us about You. Allow us to share with others the great joy of knowing You and how that changes us even through times of suffering.

In Jesus name

Amen

Legacies of Life/Our Stories

The legacies that last can’t be measured, weighed or calculated. They are not in our trophies, diplomas and ribbons. They won’t include the expensive dress, the new car or the prestigious job. What will last? How will we be remembered? What matters?

Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is there your heart will be also.  Matthew 6:19-21

As believers, our legacies become His. A long time ago, our Tuesday morning Bible study group delved into Max Lucado’s “God’s Story, Your Story,” where we revisited the old familiar themes of the Bible, from creation, to the baby Jesus, to the cross, the resurrection and our final movement from earth to a forever paradise.

Seeing the big picture of God’s story gives us new perspective on our own. If our lives belong to Him, what kind of legacy do we want to leave? How has He worked in our lives in the past? Who has been a part of our story? Who shared Jesus with us and have we had opportunities to do the same? What has He taught us through our struggles? How has the Bible changed our hearts and minds?

Studying these questions brought our group to a place where we decided to share our personal stories with one another. After the study, we took two weeks to share our Jesus stories and called them, “Testimony Tuesdays.” Witnessing about our faith to others can be intimidating. We don’t want to appear foolish or to push people away.

But our stories are just that. They are ours to share, as we witness to what God has done for us and through us. And maybe, just maybe, others will ask us questions. When others see changes in us; a new light, a new joy, a deeper peace, a kinder spirit, we can say, “Let me tell you what Jesus has done for me.”

This week I will share a few stories from my own faith walk and stories of others in my life who have shaped my faith with their own testimonies.

How would you answer if someone asked you about Jesus?

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story-those He redeemed from the hand of the foe. Psalm 107:1-2

Dear Jesus,

Storing our treasures for heaven means building up our storehouse of love for others. Give us opportunities to share You with others. Keep us bold and courageous. You love everyone. Let us be a part of sharing that love.

Amen

The Path of Life

Ready to let God guide your ways until we reach home? I am. We will all step off the path, fall down and lose our way. But His ways are above our own and He is consistently there with a hand to get us back on the straight and narrow road that leads us back toward Jesus.

The Lord will guide you always. He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Isaiah 58:11

Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long. Psalm 25:5

You guide me with great counsel and afterward, You will take me into glory. Psalm 73:24

Father,

One day we will be in glory with You. Keep us on Your path. Guide us with Your counsel. Speak Your truth into our hearts and do not let us be swayed by the world around us. We love You more than life itself.

Amen

The Path of Life

The path of life with Jesus isn’t always easy. Speaking up with boldness for His sake seems to be more and more difficult these days. Everyone has their form of “truth.” The way is narrow and Jesus tells us we will be persecuted for His name’s sake. People die every day around the world, never denying their faith in the One true God. Stay on the narrow path. Don’t compromise as the world grows into more chaos and confusion.

Satan loves confusion and chaos. And he hates our Lord. He hates Christians and Jews. And the world will band together as the days grow short. Don’t be confused. Don’t be alarmed. He foretold all that is happening around us today. He will make the way clear for us. It is a privilege to serve Him and to represent Him in a world gone mad.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14

“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.” Luke 13:14

Jesus,

Keep us on the narrow road as so many voices are leading many to the wide road of compromise and delusion and destruction. We trust You and Your Word and we stand firm on the foundation of our faith.

Amen

The Path of Life

I think I have shared the following verse with you in the past. We are talking about the path of life this week. This particular verse has meant so much to me over the last 35 years, both physically and spiritually. Being legally blind has its challenges, but Jesus has taken me on one adventure after another, as I wait for His lead.

I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them. I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do. I will not forsake them. Isaiah 42:16

Powerful words for all of us. Feeling a bit lost in life? Lost your footing? Need a trusted guide? Trusting Jesus even with our weaknesses and through our most difficult times will allow Him to smooth the way again, to bring light after a time of darkness, to guide us as we stumble along unfamiliar paths. He picks us up, dusts us off and gives us a new direction, a new beginning.

He offers an abundant life full of adventure. Don’t be afraid. He is the good Shepherd.

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.” Luke 12:32

Jesus,

We keep turning back to You. Guide our steps when we falter. Smooth the rocky places before us. Lead us when we can’t see a way out. You are our protector. You are our hope.

Amen

The Path of Life

Worshipping our God is easy. We can never pay Him back for all He has done and He gives us unconditional love in return. In fact, if we acknowledge Him and make Him first in our lives, He will direct all that we do!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

My path gets a bit off track now and again. How about yours? Jesus will get us back on the right road again and again, if we turn back to Him, acknowledge Him, submit to Him and lean on Him. Our path through life will become more clear the closer we get to Him.

Jesus,

Teach us to turn to You first each and every day, submitting to Your ways above our own. Keep our paths straight. Direct us in the way we should go.

Amen

The Path of Life

Have you met Him? The Savior? He is the way to heaven. He chose to come to earth, fully God and fully man to take all of the world’s suffering and shame upon Himself. How can we turn down an offer like that? He freely offers the gift of eternal life to everyone who believes. He is The Way.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6

The way of Christ turns the world upside down. We feel the need to earn our way. If we do some good, we are good enough. But we all fall short. We have all sinned, and Jesus is the way through.

The righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew or Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and all are justified freely by the grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Romans 3:22-24

Jesus,

How do we thank You for freely offering us this gift of grace? Open hearts to the way, the truth and the life. The blessings overflow when we come to a saving knowledge of You and Your sacrificial gift. Faith in You offers us a path for life now and a path to a glorious eternity.

Amen

Our Deepest Needs/Eternity

This earthly life of ours will end and eternity awaits. The missing piece of the puzzle here on earth is Jesus. Our deepest needs are met in Him as we learn to pray, believe, rest and love in Him. His deep peace and joy will abide with us as we recognize the truth of the brevity o life on earth and the certainty of eternal life.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11

Eternity is in our hearts. All we are missing is Jesus. Everything is made clear in Him. Set Your focus on Him as He invites you into a life on earth surrounded with His love and a promised life forever in a perfect new heaven and new earth. Why wait?

If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe with your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have eternal life. John 3:16

Jesus,

We love You. We believe in You. We take rest in You and we pray to You. Take our hearts as we confess You are Lord.

Amen

Our Deepest Needs/Rest

I have suffered and continue to deal with insomnia. Anxiety and sleeplessness began when I was a teenager. My dad died suddenly in his sleep when I was just fourteen and I felt my world slip out of control. It is easy to become fearful and overwhelmed in the middle of the night as the clock slowly ticks away the hours. Our bodies and our souls need rest.

This past week I have had a couple of wakeful nights. Frustrated and tired, I decided to list some of God’s promises to me. And I felt His presence and His peace.

The darkness has no power over our God:

Even the darkness will not be dark to You. The night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to You. Psalm 139:12

He cares for me:

Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

He is always present:

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8

He promises rest:

In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8

When you lie down, you will not be afraid. When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Proverbs3:24

“Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in You. Isaiah 26:3

Have some verses ready to battle your way through Satan’s attacks, through the fear, the doubt, the sleepless nights. His promises are real.

Lord,

You watch over us. Darkness is as light to You. You are present with us with your everlasting love. Keep us in perfect peace.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Our Deepest Needs/Prayer

None of us understands what is going on deep in the hearts of others. Often, we may put on our “happy go-to-church” faces, with the typical, “How are you?” And the response, “fine,” or “good,” “And, how are you?”  In Minnesota we call it, “Minnesota nice.”

Nice is well and good, but heading to church with our fellow believers should give us a safe place to show our hurt, to reach out for help, to forget about people-pleasing or acting a certain way. How do we reach out to others in need? Or ask for help ourselves?

What a gift it is to pray for those in need, to offer support and the love of Christ. Are you willing to open up to your fellow believers? I sure have over the years.

It is a true gift to know others are praying for you. The power of prayer is real and God moves mountains for us. He loves to hear our petitions, our needs and our gratefulness. He understands our deepest needs, the needs that are difficult to share.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests. With that in mind be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Ephesians 3:18

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. James 5:13

Prayer can meet our deepest needs. Pray continually. Pray for others in need. Pray with praise for blessings. Make your requests known to our Father in heaven, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen

Our Deepest Needs/Love

     You are dearly loved:

For we know, brothers and sisters, loved by God, that He has chosen you. 1 Thessalonians 1:4

He has called you by name:

He calls His own sheep by name and leads them out. John 10;3

He surrounds you:

You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Psalm 139:3

His love is perfect:

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18

He is always with you:

So do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

He loves you with an everlasting love:

The Lord appeared to us in the past saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love. I have drawn you with unfailing kindness”. Jeremiah 31:3

And nothing, not ever, can separate you from His love.

Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God, that is in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Romans 8:39

Dear Heavenly Father,

Your perfect love surrounds us. Your presence hems us in. We are Your dearly loved children. Nothing, not ever, can separate us from Your everlasting love. You shared that love with us through Jesus, our Lord.

Amen

Our Deepest Needs/Belief

God knows the end from the beginning. He knows the words that we will speak before one word leaves our mouth. (Psalm 139) He knows the steps we will take, and He is always ahead of us, making a way. As fallen humans in a fallen world, it is easy to become discouraged when we are facing a trial. Grief is real. Fear is real. Anxiety is real. But God…

Joseph doubted. But God…(Genesis 41:16) Israel was doomed. But God…(Genesis 45:7) Others can set out to harm us. But God…((Genesis 50:20)  We doubt when we don’t get an answer. But God…(1 Samuel 14:37) We feel guilt. But God…(Romans 5:8) When we feel we haven’t done enough. But God…(1 Corinthians 3:6)

Believe in the deepest recesses of your soul that God is working. He will overcome all of our weaknesses with His mighty strength. Our constant, steadfast faith pleases Him.

And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. Hebrews 11:6

Immediately, the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe. Help me overcome my unbelief.” Mark 9:24

Father,

We ask You to help us with our unbelief. We long to trust You in every situation, knowing You are ahead of us making a way. Our faith pleases You. We do believe!

In Jesus name,

Amen

Psalms For the Heart

There are so many Psalms to choose from, each one finding God through all of life’s ups and downs. The 91st Psalm is one of protection, reminding us of the One in charge. The One who counts the hairs on our heads (Matthew 10) and the stars in the sky (Psalm 147), the One who counts the number of our days. (Psalm 139)

Trust Him with your life. Talk to Him in trust and hope. Ask for His peace. He will honor you and your life, from today ‘til forever. Take refuge in Him.

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “he is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. Psalm 91:1-2

Acknowledge Him in all you do. Praise Him both in joy and sorrow. His protection remains firm and forever.

“Because he loves Me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him. I will protect him, for he acknowledges My name. He will call on Me and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him.” Psalm 91:14-15

Father,

The Psalms echo deep within us as we turn to You for answers, for protection, and to praise You no matter our circumstances. You remain steadfast and true. Protect us and guide us. Please protect and give strength to those in Ukraine and those running for their lives. Please God, help them from this evil.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Psalms For the Heart

Seeking God during times of deep grief and heartache may seem impossible. If you find yourself in a difficult time, let the Psalms speak for you. Psalm 42 is a beautiful Psalm penned by a man in deep sorrow. Listen to the first verse.

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. Psalm 42:1

Have you found yourself in a desert, panting for something to sooth your soul? Jesus tells us He is the living water. (John 4:14) Those that find Him will never be thirsty again. Let your soul pant for the presence of Christ and He will meet your needs.

In both verses 6 and 11, David cries out in lament. Why, he asks, is his soul downcast? Even in his grief, He turns to God and praises Him. Praising our God from the depths reminds us of who He is. He will bring us through. He will give us living water. He will refresh our soul. His voice calls to and meets the very deepest parts of us.

Deep calls to deep in the roar of Your waterfalls, all your waves and breakers have swept over me. Psalm 42:7

Let the living water of Jesus and His Word wash over you, cleanse you and give you His peace.

Father,

Thank You for these words that meet us in the depths. We cry to You. We praise You, even when we find ourselves in a desert land. Give us hope today as You take our hand and walk with us and quench our deepest thirst.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Psalms For the Heart

Another of the many Psalms to savor is the 37th Psalm. When the world feels out of control, when you see evil rising and wonder, “Where is God?” this Psalm will bring comfort and a firm foundation. Our God will vindicate. Through Jesus, our righteous reward remains steadfast and forever. Delight yourself in Him and trust Him, above all you see in this temporal world. He will keep us safe as we trust Him.

Trust in the Lord and do good. Dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:3-4

These two verses speak volumes to us in living life. “Trust in God! Do good!  Take delight in the Lord! He will give you the desires of your heart!”  So much promise and truth for us. When we look to Him in faith and trust, our desires will match His will and we will find peace and joy right in the midst of chaos and evil.

One day soon, God will vanquish evil and we will inherit the new heaven and the new earth. Hang on to His hope.

A little while, and the wicked will be no more. Though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and will enjoy peace and prosperity. Psalm 37:10-11

Finally, in this Psalm, God gives us a promise. Even though we stumble, (and we will!) He will lead us into forever.

The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him. Though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with His hand. Psalm 37:23-24

Lord,

We take refuge in You as you uphold us with Your hand. Keep Your Word in our hearts as we make our way in the world. May evil be vanquished and freedom reign. One day all will be new. Forever awaits.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Psalms For the Heart

Psalm 19 is one of my favorites. This Psalm combines the majesty of nature, with the wonder of God’s word, two of the places we witness the truth and splendor of our Lord. There are only 14 verses. I invite you to read through them today.

As you venture outside, take in the sights and sounds, the warmth of the sunshine, the cleansing rain, the way the earth is set in the universe, day and night, sunrise and sunset. As the birds welcome the morning light and the nocturnal animals set out in the nighttime hours, as the trees and flowers bloom with the promise of new life, take time to thank God.

And search God’s word as if hunting for silver and gold. The wisdom found there is much more precious to us, much more valuable. Ask God to reveal the hidden things of your heart, to bring them out in the light of His countenance. This Psalm ends with a verse I speak out often to our Lord.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, my Rock and my Redeemer.  Psalm 19:14

May our hearts and our words bring honor to Jesus, today and tomorrow.

Lord,

The words speak to the deepest parts of our soul. We praise You today for Your creation that welcomes us to rise each morning and gives us rest each night. We praise You for the Word and how it reaches in to meet us right where we are. May our words be pleasing to You, our Rock and our Redeemer.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Psalms For the Heart

The Psalmist cries out to God and gives voice to our human thoughts and feelings. The writers seek answers, as we do. We read and feel the pain that mirrors our grief. The Psalms praise God through the ups and downs of life, as we should. If you are searching, grieving, seeking forgiveness, or praising God, the Psalms will echo in your heart and soul. Seek God in them. Find comfort and hope in them. The human condition is found there.

The word “Psalms” can be translated in the Hebrew or Greek as “praises,” or “songs of praise.” Many of these words were set to music and the ancient Jews sang them as they set out for the temple. Others are Psalms of lament that cry out to God. Many of the Psalms were penned by King David, others attributed to various writers, including one as far back as Moses. We will look at a few this week.

Whatever season of life, whatever emotion, whether in joy or a sorrow, you will find words you can use to pray and to praise. The following is a favorite Psalm for many, a reminder of where we need to look to find our peace and our protection.

I will lift up my eyes to the hills-my help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip-He who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you-the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm-He will watch over your life. The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Psalm 121

This Psalm was sung as the Israelites traveled up to the temple of God, a Psalm of ascent. Whatever the future, God holds us in the palm of His hand. He will watch over our lives, our coming and going, now and forevermore. Hallelujah! Look up to the loving God watching over you.

Father,

We thank You for the Psalms, for these songs of praise written for us. You watch over us, protect us and love us as we look up to praise You.

Amen

Pray Trust Hope

Pray in desperation. Pray in deep gratitude. Pray in grief and mourning. Pray in the beauty of creation. Pray over the meal. Pray over the child. Pray over the world. Pray with your spouse. Pray with other believers. Pray with Jesus. Be faithful in prayer.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12

Devote yourselves in prayer, being watchful and thankful. Colossians 4:2

As I pray for you all this morning, may you be filled with courage to get through the day, may you be filled with hope for the future, may your hearts be comforted with love and may you trust Jesus with it all. Pray.

And this is my prayer, that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight. Philippians 1:9

Lord,

Teach us to pray, to trust and to hope.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Pray Always

Pray continually. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NIV)

Pray without ceasing 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NKJV)

Pray without ceasing. Pray continually. How do we do that?  How about staying aware of God’s presence throughout the day? He is right beside you. Remember His Spirit resides within you. He is behind you encouraging you to move forward. He walks ahead guiding you in the right direction. Let the Spirit continually feed your body, mind and soul.

Acknowledge His presence continually. Pray without ceasing. Ask for His help before you speak. Ask for His wise words before a confrontation. Ask for His peace as you make a tough decision. Ask for His strength to get through a difficult time. Ask for His comfort as you go to visit a hurting friend. Ask and you will receive. He is available every moment of every day in every circumstance.

Jesus,

You remain with us throughout our days and through the toughest nights. May we all feel Your presence today wherever we are and in whatever we do.

Amen

Rising As Incense

Our God loves it when we take time with Him. To survive this life, through the ordinary, the heart-breaking and the amazing, we need the loving presence of our Creator. The Bible tells us our prayers rise as incense to Him, that He keeps our tears in a bottle, that our faith pleases Him.

I call to You, Lord. Come quickly to me, hear me when I call to You. May my prayer be set before You as incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice. Psalm 141:1-2

When you don’t know what to pray, sit with Him awhile and the Holy Spirit will bring your needs to the Father. Picture your prayers rising to the very throne room of heavenly grace. Jesus, through His Spirit, intercedes for us. Call to Him to be with you. Sit with Him and praise Him. Your prayers and your praise will be lifted up and all will be well with your soul.

Lord,

We thank You for being there. We long to take more time to sit in Your holy presence, to understand Your Father’s heart for us. Teach us how to pray. We call to you.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Pray Day and Night

I read a quote a long time ago that went something like this: Prayer moves the hand that moves the world. Are you seeking His wisdom? Are you praying for answers? Are you praising the God of your life? And is He the God of your life? Or are the distractions, the pleasures, the television, the job, the busy details keeping Him out of first place?

By day the Lord directs His love, at night His song is with me-a prayer to the God of my life. Psalm 42:8

One sign of a life filled with the God of life, is a deep joy and peace. Are they missing from your life? As you surrender to the One with the answers, the One that will turn you from trouble, the One of your heart, the inner joy will be available and infectious. That joy and peace can and will remain throughout your life.

By day let the Lord direct your life and by night let His song fill you with joy and peace. Surrender to the God of your life. He comes first.

Father,

We come to You on our knees, day and night. You are always there. Show us Your love and keep us wise in our decisions today. We pray for deep peace and joy to infuse us and that it will be noticeable to the world around us. Make a difference in the way we live. Help us to show the world the God of our life.

It is Jesus and in His name we pray,

Amen
