Faith Tested

Has your faith in God been tested? The Bible is clear. It will be tested. The testing of our faith produces good. So hard to understand when we doubt, when we wander, when we suffer, when we ask, “Why?”  There are so many struggles throughout our lives that bring about the testing of our faith.

God will be present through it all. Even at our bleakest moments, our deepest struggles, our continual doubts, He will return us back to Him, and bring good things from the pain.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you have trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work, so that you may be mature not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

Have you persevered, even when you wondered how you would make it? I know I have. When we come out on the other side of suffering, we find our faith has increased, our trust in Jesus made stronger, and our hope assured. Not easy. Would never ask for it. But God is good. All the time.

In all this, you greatly rejoice, though now, for a little while, you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith-of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1:6-7

Rejoicing in grief? I am certainly not there yet. But faith remains through it all. All to the praise, glory and honor of Jesus.

Lord,

Make Your powerful presence known to those in deep suffering right now. May they feel the comfort and peace and hope that only You provide. This fallen world is filled with imperfect people, with all kinds of trials, but our hope is in You.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Faith

It’s all about faith. Our faith, our belief, our trust, our hope all depends on our God. Our faith is in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The assurance of our home in heaven. Our faith pleases our God.

And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists, and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. Hebrews 11:6

To find Him, we must seek Him. Are you looking? Wondering if there really is a God? Read through the Scriptures. Pray and ask. He is there, waiting.

Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7

Jesus will not come into your life without seeking, without knocking, without asking Him to be your Lord and Savior. And faith will be yours forever!

Faith will do that. Give us confidence and assurance. We do not see. But we believe. Our hope is secure in Him.

Jesus,

Thank You for the gift of the faith that pleases You. Give us complete assurance today in all You have planned for us. We love You.

Amen

The Gift of God's Truth

I love picturing your faces as you read God’s word, as He draws something off of the page meant just for you, as He brings to mind someone in your own life that needs prayer, as He leads you into new promises and a deeper faith, into new life, new hope, new beginnings.

As we take time to pray, to bow in worship, to read the living word, our spirits become hungry for His truth. Take these words from holy scripture as our prayer.

Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long. Psalm 25:5

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love. 2 John 1:3

But, as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord. I wait for God, my Savior, my God will hear me. Micah 7:7

God is full of grace, mercy and peace. He hears you as you call out to Him. Wait in hope for His answers and love one another.

Father,

I pray for everyone reading these words. Watch over them. Bless them. Guide them in Your mighty ways. We love You.

In Jesus name,

Amen

The Gift of Growing Old

Jesus honors life. He knows and creates the baby in the womb. He comforts the aged. He sees beauty within. He honors us as we honor our parents. The elderly hold a special place in God’s heart.

Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness. Proverbs 16:31

Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He. I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you. I will sustain you and I will rescue you. Isaiah 46:4

Not everyone will have the privilege of growing old. Honor your parents. Honor the elderly. They are appreciated and carried by our God. He will sustain them and bring them home.

Lord,

Our culture turns away from the elderly and the weak. Show us how to honor them, protect them and take care of them.

In Jesus name,

Amen

The Gift of New Beginnings

Looking back through the years, it seems we experience death and new life close together. The daughter-in-law of our close friends died on Christmas Eve several years ago. Their daughter delivered a precious baby boy a short time later. Such a blessing to experience this new life; a happy and joyous event, right after experiencing such tragedy and loss.

A reminder from our God of new beginnings, regeneration, the circle of life. We grieve as our loved ones go home to heaven and we rejoice as we welcome the new little ones around us.

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up, do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19

Your eyes saw my unformed body, all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:16

 Father,

We trust You with the number of our days. Give peace to our hearts as we say our earthly goodbyes and hellos. We praise you for this new birth and the joy he will bring.

In Jesus name,

Amen

The Gift of Hope

Hope is a beautiful word. Once hope is realized, it is no longer hope. Hope is future-oriented, a distant tug, an almost-there, a dream waiting to be fulfilled. Will there be happiness again? Will there be a way through the wilderness or through the desert? Will God answer our prayers?

Hope. There is always hope. I pray you have hope in your heart today. If hope seems far off, you are in good company. Elijah ran from his enemies, praying to die. David fell to his knees in anguish wondering why God had left him. Moses ran off to the desert for forty years in defeat. Job lost everything, before returning to hope.

Hear these words from King David,

My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” Psalm 42:3

Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. Psalm 42:7

As David turns his attention to his God, his misery turns into hope.

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so troubled within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 43:5

Fill your soul with the anchor of hope in Christ.

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain. Hebrews 6:19

Father,

Life can be overwhelmingly hard and sad. You have given us tears and deep emotions to help us through. Give us a bit of hope no matter where we are today. Give us strength within from Your Holy Spirit.

In Jesus name,

Amen

The Gift of New Life

The eyes of the Lord cannot look on sin. (Habukkuk 1:13) The only possible way for God to see us, to be in relationship with us, is through His Son, Jesus Christ. Because of our sinful natures, there is no way for God to reach us or for us to reach God. He is pure. He is holy. He is righteous. He is truth. He is light.

Jesus, fully man and fully God, lived the sinless life that is impossible for each one of us. Imagine God stepping down from heaven and living and dying for us. Not only did He suffer a painful death, He carried each of our sins, all of our diseases, all of the violence, all of it, on Himself. The agony on that cross is beyond anything any of us will suffer in our lifetimes.

What does He ask of us in return for His great sacrifice? To believe He did it. It is a free gift. Why will so many turn away? Why do we try so hard not to believe? Satan’s schemes and deceptions are alive and well and will increase until Christ’s return. Stay faithful. Stay watchful. Stay in relationship with Jesus. God sees us through the lens of Christ. His righteousness became ours and God sees us as blameless!  Hallelujah. Praise His holy name.

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord, Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1

Father,

How can we thank You for sending Jesus in our place? His death and resurrection give us eternal life, with Your grace and through our faith. It is so simple. Yet many do not understand. Help us, as Your sons and daughters, to spread the good news of this free gift of life.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Freedom in Christ

As we lay our burdens at the cross, giving everything to the One with the answers, we can feel a sense of freedom. We will find freedom from the fear that binds us, freedom from the addictions that hold us in prison, freedom from the sin that holds us captive, freedom from fear of death, freedom from the wounds of our past, freedom to forgive.  We are no longer slaves to the world around us.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 6:1

That yoke of Christ we spoke of earlier in the week is a yoke of freedom. Jesus eases our burdens and lessens our loads. The yoke of slavery to the world is what holds us captive. We are slaves to it without Jesus. Satan likes nothing better than to keep us from our God-given purpose in Christ. He seeks to hold us down, captive to the world. The devil’s schemes fall into three areas of temptation.

For everything in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-comes not from the Father, but from the world. 1 John2:16

What a gift we have in Christ! He offers us hope in every situation, a way out of every temptation, a new life of freedom, transformed and made new.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone. The new is here. 2 Corinthians 5:17

Made new! Free and saved forever! Christ has the answers to our burdens, the way to move us through into new life, and hope.

Jesus,

Thank You for the gift of freedom from the world. Teach us to let go and let you lead. You have already set us in the heavenly places, our true home. Use us through our temporary lives and keep us standing firm in the freedom You offer.

Amen

Pass It On

The God of hope is available. Hopelessness is all around us. Suicide rates are up all over the world. Drug overdoses have become an epidemic in our country as we look for ways to alleviate pain, anxiety and fear. Medications are necessary and worldly help is necessary in the form of counselors and rehabilitation facilities. The hope available from God may be the most necessary of all.

Teen Challenge is a Christian drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Their success rate is higher than most. Christ is in the center of all they do. The testimonies of former patients move the heart. Lifting ourselves up to Jesus and giving ourselves to Him completely can be the beginning of a truly transformed life, a life of hope, a life of freedom.

Many of these addicts choose to help others with the love of Christ. The following verses speak of the amazing blessings we have to offer when we are first given compassion and hope from God.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Each one of us will suffer through trials and tribulations in our lives. Each story is unique and Jesus will use each one to shine His glory in a unique way. He uses our experiences, our struggles, our deep grief for good. We are able to speak into the lives of others. Pass it on. Pay it forward. Pray for hope. Provide comfort and compassion.

Father,

Thank You for giving us compassion and comfort through the trials of life. Bring hope to the hopeless, life to those who have lost their way, and use us to do Your will.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Love One Another

Getting involved in the lives of others takes time and sacrificial love. Our culture tells us to be independent, that we can do anything on our own, that we can be anything, do anything. We are strong and able.

Life does not always go according to plan. We need humble hearts to be used by God in the lives of others. Tom lived in our neighborhood. He was born into a dysfunctional and troubled family. His daily bike rides through the parking lot of our church led him to our ministering angel on campus, our maintenance guy, Denny. Denny took Tom under his wing.

Chatting with him for long periods of time brought out the best in young Tom. Soon, at a very young age, he began attending church. The pastors, the kids and other parents grew to love this very special child.

His faith grew in Christ and his faith grew in humanity. He would grow into a handsome, hard-working young man, now a husband and a father of two girls. I had the privilege of connecting with him at Denny’s funeral and he was moved to tears as he spoke lovingly about this mentor, this man going out of his way to give hope to a child.

What a beautiful story. Tom took hold of the faith through others able and willing to share his burdens, to offer hope and love in a fragile and sometimes frightening world.

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. John 15:12

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifice, God is pleased. Hebrews 13:16

Jesus,

You command us to love one another as You have loved us. Only with Your Holy Spirit, can we move into the lives of others. Show us how and when to bring hope, Your eternal hope to others.

Amen

Pray Continually

Never underestimate the power of prayer in alleviating burdens. Prayer moves the hands that move the world. Giving everything to Jesus in prayer brings us a sense of relief and peace. Jesus loves it when we communicate with Him and ask Him to intercede in our lives and in the lives of others. Lift it all up in prayer, even before stepping out to help.

The Holy Spirit will begin His work in the lives of those for whom we pray. Almost 20 years ago, the inside of our home was destroyed by the smoke from a fire in our lower level. It was devastating. We lost many of our material possessions and were out of our home for 7 months as it was rebuilt.

Our daughters were young teenagers at the time. You can try to imagine starting over with new clothes, the decision we made in rebuilding our house from bare studs and the impossibility of going through the inventory of all we lost to give long, endless lists to our insurance company. Each item brought a fresh sense of grief and loss.

Our pastors came by as we sat at our neighbors home immediately after the firefighters left, and one of them stood in our smoke-filled home with our family and prayed. Our church family prayed as well as our friends, each spreading the word. We had church communities all over the country praying for us. The fellowship of believers moves mountains.

I physically, emotionally and spiritually felt the power of those prayers. I had not, and have not since that time, experienced anything quite like it. Strength was poured into me and the overwhelming sense of love was felt by all of us.

When sharing the burdens of others, pray. Pray first, pray last and pray consistently. God’s hand is available to do His work. Pray at all times, in every situation.

Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. Do that and stay alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints. Ephesians 6:18

Our Father in heaven is there, ready to give us peace in the midst of the storm.

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet and He brought them to their desired haven. Psalm 107:28-30

Ask for prayer. Pray for yourselves, your family, your friends and for all who are burdened. Believe He will calm the storm, lifting your burdens as He carries you out. Pray!

Pray continually. 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Father,

The power of our prayers is real. You stand ready to listen and to work. Remind us to pray continually as we share in the burdens of life.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Burdens and Loads

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

For each one should carry their own load. Galatians 6:5

The verses above may appear to be contradictory, but as we take a closer look at the Bible, they do make sense. How do we carry our own load and carry each other’s burdens? In God’s view, responsibility for our lives is essential, to take care of ourselves as much as possible, to be mature, living with honor and integrity.

But the law of Christ asks us to share the burdens of life with each other. Throughout our lifetimes, we will be burdened over and beyond what we can handle. We may be burdened with grief, burdened with worry, burdened with care-giving, burdened with fear, burdened with a health crisis. We are called to share those burdens. Christ gives us this example.

Come to Me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11;28-29

A yoke was placed over the necks of two oxen in the days of Jesus, which would allow them to share the work. Jesus shares in our burdens and gives us rest for our souls. We are to follow His example of sharing the burdens of others.

Ask for help when you need it. Give care when given the opportunity. The burdens of life may be lessened, as we share in the tough times of life.

Lord,

Your example teaches us to share our burdens. Teach us how to be responsible for ourselves, how to share life with others, and how to ask for help when our burdens become too heavy to carry alone. Keep us humble and gentle in heart as we move out into the world today.

In Jesus name,

Amen

Growing Spiritual Fruit

Jesus loves you. Are you ready to cultivate the soil of your heart in preparation to plant the seeds of His love story into good soil? Finally, on this Friday, the parable of the farmer gives us hope for a harvest. Not all of the seed is scattered, or planted in shallow ground, or is choked out by the thorns of the world. There is hope for us after all!

“Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.” Mark 4:8

“Others like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop-some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.” Mark 4:20

When the word of God enters, grows and is lived out, there will be an abundance of good fruit. Our hearts will have their own seeds to share and those seeds can multiply over and over again. Jesus tells us that others will recognize us by our fruit. (see Matthew 7) Maybe you know Jesus through the fruit of others around you. Do you recognize this fruit in your life or in the life of others? I want that seed to grow and multiply in me one hundred times over before I meet Jesus face-to-face.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

Notice the fruit listed first? It is love. All of the other fruit comes from receiving the love of Christ and acting on it. Good soil, good seed, good God. Maybe we can spread some of that good seed around.

Dear Jesus,

Let the love we show others come directly from You. We can’t do it on our own strength. Let the fruit of our lives be recognized by others, so they may know we belong to You. You make us unique and unusual in a dark world.

Amen

Thorny Soil

The Bible tends to hit us right in the heart and forces us to look at our lives and our motives. The parable of the farmer continues today. For some, we have seen, the seed of the word is taken away as soon as it is heard, just as seed is scattered in the wind. For others, the soil of our hearts is too shallow and when trouble comes, there is no root to sustain us. Today, the seeds have germinated. The seed has sprouted, but the environment around the plant keeps it from bearing fruit. Here is Jesus:

Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain.  Mark 4:7

     Again, Jesus explains:

Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word, but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Mark 4:18-19

I want my desires to be His. His ways are always higher and more beneficial than mine. He fills us with what is excellent and lovely and pure. What are the thorns that stick to you like glue? Are you filled with worries, unable to trust God? Is your mind occupied with striving for more, rather than being content right now? Maybe it is the pleasures and lusts of life that take God away from being first. Let’s pull them out one by one, painful as it may seem at the time to allow the word to grow in abundance. Those weeds of the world will no longer zap and choke all of our time and energy and God will lead us in the way we should go, in true freedom.

Dear Jesus,

Take away our worries, our constant striving, our priorities that take us away from You and Your word. The Bible gives life, the abundant and fruitful life. Bury the seeds deep, cultivate the soil of our hearts and help us to remove the thorns. We want to bear fruit for You.

Amen

Rocky Soil

Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.  Mark 4:5-6

For some of us, there was a time when the Bible gave us hope. We were filled with joy at the thought of Jesus. We believe it’s enough. Unless we are saturated with the living water of the Bible, the trials and sorrows of life take over and we allow the little faith we had to fall away and dry up. It withers and dies, leaving us parched and alone in a difficult world.

Our faith was shallow. The roots never took hold, never grew deep enough to sustain us. There is nothing to hold onto through the dark nights. We ask, “Why?” and we don’t hear an answer. Is that the cry of your heart today?

The word is able to root us deeply as we abide in Jesus. Developing strength and trust and hope and perseverance through knowledge of the Bible will prepare us ahead of time. There will be promises from the word of God to lift us up and sustain us through the hard times. Let this Scripture be a prayer for you.

I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees. I will not neglect your Word. Psalm 119:15

We can meditate and consider and delight in God’s word. Do not neglect it. It will nourish, fill and support us during the desert times.

Jesus, once again, explains the verse we began with above in this parable of the farmer:

Others, like seed sown in rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. March 4:16-17

Let’s become rooted deep, so we do not wither or fall away. Is the soil of your soul prepared? The living water of the word is ready and will satisfy and lift you up. Let’s plant it in our hearts and souls. It will be our miraculous reservoir when trouble comes.

Dear Jesus,

You are the word. (John 1) Show us the words meant just for us today as we seek to dig deeper, to be rooted in good soil, to abide in Your vine and to bear much fruit.

Amen

Shallow Soil

“Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.”  Mark 4:3-4

The impatiens in our story yesterday are comfortable. They fit in. Each flower is one of a crowd, like the seasoned parishioner sitting in the same pew, year after year. A little bit of church, a Sunday smile, a Scripture heard and forgotten on the way out the door. The scattered seeds of faith are never germinated.

A tug of emotion may hit our hearts a time or two, but the Bible? Satan loves it when we disregard the Word of God. “it is out-dated.” “The Old Testament is too violent.” “I know Jesus loves me and that’s all I need.” We’ve heard all of the excuses. The lies of Satan go way back to the garden, when he placed the first doubt in Eve’s mind. “Did God really say…?”

The word is God’s love story written just for you. As you read the word, the word reads you. It is life-changing, true, and it will mold you and me into the image of Christ. Jesus explains the Scripture verses above.

The farmer sows the word. Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.  Mark 4:14-15

Take a chance on leaving the safe corner of the garden where nothing changes and nothing is expected. Let the Great Gardener grow you with the seeds of His word. Let His green thumb sow those seeds until you stand out from the usual crowd. There is not much excitement or adventure in the corner, in the shade. Allow God’s light to penetrate a little deeper today. You may have to squint in the bright light for awhile. Adjusting to the Son is glorious work, not to mention the warm glow from within. Step out into the light.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.  2 Timothy 3:16-17

Dear Jesus,

Take away our fear of Your word. It is God-breathed. Open our eyes and ears to see and hear. Open our hearts and minds to savor and understand all. Let the seeds be planted deep in good and fertile soil

Amen

Tender Fields of Grace

The impatiens looked at each other with satisfaction. Bunched together in full array, they created quite a spectacle. The pretty in pink, the deep-royal purple, the bright-neon orange, together with the pure glorious white, made a luscious picture in this shady corner of the yard. They swayed together, chattering as one in their comfort zone in the shade. Life was good.

In the center garden, however, the parched flowers hung listlessly in the still of the noonday sun.  The large heads of the hydrangea, the stems of the daisies and the sweet aster drooped with thirst. They did not have the energy to look up or to encourage one another. They had lost their sense of beauty. They had lost all strength. Even their roots felt the drought.

Near the back fence, the fertile plot stood ready for anything.  The compost heap had eventually turned into this rich soil, eager to accept new seed, to be filled with something new.

Weeds were flourishing everywhere. They were hidden between the full set of impatiens in the shade. They stood in full view among the fading blooms in the center garden, tall and strong even through this succession of long, dry days. And there they were, low to the ground, perched and waiting. They found the first spots in the fertile ground, ready to spoil the success of any new seed.

The tenant came through the garage door and noticed a stray branch hanging from the large ash tree in the corner. He returned to the garage for a tool and a ladder and cut the wandering branch away.

A brilliant light suddenly shone on the comfort zone of the impatiens in the corner. The impatiens had never experienced a light such as this. In the comfort of their shady spot, they could never have imagined they were missing anything at all, certainly nothing like this. To think there had been something so magnificent just waiting to shine on them and through them.

As the keeper of the garden moved back to the yard after putting away his tools, he noticed the sad looking garden in the center. Back he went again, to fetch a bucket. He went slowly back and forth, pouring bucket after bucket of cool water over and over the parched flowers, until their heads, once again, turned to the sky. Their thirsty roots were filled with the living water that gives strength and hope and health to their weary bodies.

He strolled toward the back of the yard. The readiness of the soil caught his attention. He moved one more time to the garage and pulled out several seed packets.

He scattered them around the garden, imagining the wildflowers rising up in their various colors and forms, scattering more seed as they grew. Eventually these few seeds would scatter and move farther and farther along this back fence to create an even more bountiful harvest of color. Spreading seeds here and there can bring an amazing harvest to the patient gardener.

He pulled a few weeds as he walked back around the yard. He soon realized there would be no way to yank them all out. He would continue working a little bit at a time over the next few weeks. He guessed there would always be weeds poking around here and there, threatening to spoil what is good.

He stood, surveying the yard with a practiced eye.  The Master would be pleased. The pruned tree looked much better and the amount of sunlight on the impatiens would only help them shine brighter for the Master. He had almost lost some flowers in the center garden. What if they had died and the master would never have seen them? He caught them just in time and now just look at them!

The Master had shared with him the dream for the large area in the back. He visualized it in full harvest, not as it was now, but as it would be one day. And now the time just might be right to sow those seeds. The Master would help with the weeds. He always had a vision and an answer.

     How is your garden growing?

Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times. Mark 4:8

Lord,

Show us how to get out of our comfort zone, to stay rooted in You, to plant seeds wherever we go.

In Jesus name,

Amen

The Gift of Grace

Feeling a little lost or imagining that you just don’t measure up? Yeah, me too. And here is why.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:24

Luckily for us, God sent a Savior to die in our place and we can now freely share in God’s glory!

All are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Romans 3:24

It is hard to define grace and graciousness. God’s grace is a complete gift to us. The power of His grace finds us and gives us an open heart to just believe. Here is a great verse to remind you of His free gift to us.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves. It is the gift of God, not by works, so that no man can boast. Ephesians 2:9-10

That makes it clear. A true gift. This gift just requires our faith. That’s it. Feeling the need for a loving Father, a Savior, a firm foundation that will never fail, a Rock to hold onto, a Shepherd to guide you, a compassionate, forgiving God? Find it all in Jesus Christ. Receive His grace today. It is enough for the rest of your life.

Amen

Need Grace?

I have a confession to make. I have not acted with grace or graciousness over the past week. My back went out on me. What did it? I made the mistake of bending over to get something out of a kitchen cabinet. How sad is that? Just when I was completely healed from my hip surgery and out walking and doing my everyday activities!

In the scheme of things, this is a minor issue. But it is a reminder that becoming more like Christ can easily go by the wayside when life happens. And luckily, we can give each other grace, just as my husband, friends and family continually do for me. My husband picked up the slack with no complaints (including handling over a foot of snow)  and my son-in-law took a couple of days off of work to stay home with our sweet Brooklyn.

We are blessed to take care of our granddaughter four days a week and we miss her!  But bending and lifting would have been impossible and I so appreciate the time to rest. I think, as Christians, we need to be honest with each other. I have dealt with anxiety over the years, and a Christian friend told me talking about it to others would rob me of my testimony.  Imagine trying to be a perfect Christian all the time. An exhausting and impossible goal!

When we completely open ourselves to each other and to life, we can meet others right where they are, just as Christ did. He did not condemn. He understood and brought others to Himself. Going through suffering of any kind throughout our lives gives us compassion for others. Those that may not know Christ know when someone cares.

The grace of others when I need it is powerful and, of course, Jesus is right there with grace upon grace. And it is sufficient for this day. And this day includes Brooklyn. Seeing her would brighten anyone’s day.

But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

Jesus,

Thank You for understanding our human frailties, for walking through our suffering with us and for finding the grace to pour over us to get us through.

We love You.

Amen

The Graciousness of God

Our God is a gracious God. His face is inclined toward us, His favor is bestowed on us. He lavishes us with compassion and mercy. The Greek word for “gracious” comes from another word meaning to be filled with what we need. We told our kids that Santa brought them what they wanted, but Jesus always gives them what they need.

Your every need will be met with Christ. He will bless you. A blessing given by a parent to a child was of utmost value in the Jewish culture. Let’s continue to bless our friends and family, to pray blessings over their lives and to speak them out loud. Our Pastor’s wife placed the sign of the cross on the foreheads of her children as they left for school each day, reminding them of the promises of Christ following them each moment of each day.

Let the words of this blessing from God wash over you and fill you.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.

The Lord lift His countenance upon you and give you His peace.

Numbers 6:24-25

Grace Upon Grace

God continually fills us with His love, with His Spirit, with His grace. I long to be filled to the brim this year. The book of John is a great book to read when we need to fill our souls. Listen to these beautiful verses.

The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, sent from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

Our of His fullness, we have received grace upon grace. John 1:16

Jesus is full of grace and truth. And from His fullness we find grace and more grace. God’s grace gives us what we do not deserve. His unmerited favor and His forgiveness go beyond our worldly definition. He died for us and took the sins of the world upon His perfect shoulders.

He will never, ever give up on you or on me. His forgiveness, His mercies are waiting for us time and again. They are new every morning.  Great is His faithfulness. (Lamentations 3)

Father,

Thank You for your unending favor and grace. We don’t deserve it, but You love us that much.

In Jesus name,

Amen

New Year, New Grace

Seven years ago, inspired by my cousin, Audrey, I began to choose a word of the year. The second year, I realized I had begun alphabetically and have since continued the tradition. My goal is to live long enough to go through the entire alphabet.

To be honest, as with any typical resolution over the decades, I have allowed some words and their meanings, to slip my mind, while others have stuck with me throughout the year. Our intentions are good, aren’t they? Our God is full of “grace,” which is my word for this year. He allows us to find new hope, new beginnings, new purpose each year (each day) as we turn each fresh, new page.

With “authentic” desire, God finds ways to give us new “beginnings.” And we find our way back to “contentment,” as He “deepens” our faith. Our “enthusiasm” returns within His “forgiving” heart. Let’s begin this new year together, trusting God to find a future for us filled with His blessings, His “grace,” and another new beginning.

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do. Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. Philippians 3;13

Is God beginning something new in your heart?

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up. Do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19

Father,

Give us Your unending grace and fill us with Your Holy Spirit this year as we forge new paths through the wilderness. Show us the way.

In Jesus name,

Amen
