Did you know the Bible played a large role in the
development of our language and many of the common phrases we use today come
from Scripture? Here are just a few you might hear and use frequently. The
verses are from the original King James version of the Bible.
The blind leading the blind:
“Let
them alone; they are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind,
both shall fall into the ditch.” Matthew 15:13-14
Can a leopard change his spots?
“Can
the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then may ye also do
good that are accustomed to do evil.”
Jeremiah 13:23
A fly in the ointment:
“Dead
flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour, so
doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.”
Ecclesiastes 10:1
For everything there is a season:
Read Ecclesiastes 3. You will find the words that
made up the song, “Turn, Turn, Turn” by the Byrds.
Nothing but skin and bones:
“All
my intimate friends detest me; those I love have turned against me. I am
nothing but skin and bones.” Job 19:19-20
Rise and shine:
“Arise,
shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.”
Isaiah 60:1
This is
fun. Maybe we’ll continue tomorrow.
Dear Lord,
We speak Your glorious Word without even knowing
it. Keep the truth of the Bible written on the tablets of our hearts for Jesus’
sake.
Amen
