Kindness and Compassion

It’s easy to allow bitterness to grow. Years and years ago I had a falling out with my brother and sister-in-law. They completely quit talking to me for a few years. I remember growing bitter and angry. I nursed and rehearsed all of the things I would like to say to them.

The unforgiveness we spoke of yesterday and the bitterness that can grow when we are angry are not healthy, and the Bible warns against these negative emotions. Our irritations and our critical thoughts can become habits and grow into what the Bible calls a bitter root.

See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God, and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. Hebrews 12:15

Not only do these negative emotions harm ourselves as we allow them to eat away at us, but they defile the people around us. All of us have known bitter and negative people and their attitudes seep into the atmosphere around them.  These verses will steer us in the right direction.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32

Jesus offers us forgiveness, kindness and compassion. Give the same away to others, no matter how they treat you. Not easy, but it will bless you and others.

Father,

Help us to forgive and to remove any bitter root or anger against others. When we are hurt, allow us to give it to You to work out for us. We trust You.

In Jesus name,

Amen
