The Simple Joys of Kindness

It's easy to take our relationships for granted, to become annoyed with the people closest to us and around us, to look for the imperfect rather than the perfect, for the deficiency rather than the delight. Jesus gives us a heart to look for the good in others, to humble ourselves and to do good.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests, but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4

These Scriptures are easy to gloss over. When you read through them more than once, it can be difficult to imagine fulfilling these words as followers of Jesus. But, with God’s help, with the Holy Spirit flowing through us, we can ask to become humble, to serve with love, even when we are irritated or annoyed. Impossible? Jesus has a reminder for us today.

Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man, is possible with God. Luke 18:27

I can do all this with Him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

Find simple joy with the people around you this day. Give encouragement and compassion, put others before yourself. Humility, gentleness and kindness are rare these days. Shine your light. Be different in a world gone mad. Never easy, but with God, all things are possible. Rely on His strength.

Lord,

We do know that You bring deep joy when we obey Your Words. Give us the joy You provide by humbling ourselves, by looking for the good in others, for bringing encouragement and to appreciate those we love most.

In Jesus name,

Amen
