The
heroes in my life have changed over the years. The people I view as wise and
beautiful contrast with the world’s view of beauty and wisdom. I was shocked to
see an older Hollywood star after she had, what appeared to be, many cosmetic
surgeries. There was nothing natural about her and there was little evidence
left of the young star of decades past. The quest for a youthful appearance
brought about a grotesque mask with misshapen features.
My
neighbor and friend, Phyllis, is 82 years old. When I spend time with her, I
realize I want to grow up to be just like her! Gray hair surrounds her like a
halo and her countenance is lit with kindness and gentleness. She wears little
or no make-up. Her eyes sparkle with humor. She is beautiful. She has walked
with Jesus for most of her life and His image flows from deep within.
Gray
hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness.
Proverbs 16:31
How does
God see us? What does He consider most valuable? You might be surprised this week as we think about growing in the Spirit. Our spirits can grow and shine ever brighter,
even as our bodies age. The challenge is to learn to see with spiritual eyes
and ears.
Those
who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;
but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what
the Spirit desires. Romans 8:5
Therefore
we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are
being renewed day by day. 2 Corinthians
4:16
Dear Lord,
Your Holy Spirit comes to live within us when we
first call you Lord and Savior. Teach us how to grow inwardly as we set our
minds on what the Spirit desires. Our Spirits can be renewed day by day.
In Jesus Name
Amen
