Do
not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the
Spirit. Ephesians 5:18
The
Bible gives instruction and power for our lives. If only we would heed the
advice and listen to the warnings. Being a baby boomer, I have seen the destructive
consequences of over-indulgence in alcohol; car accidents, loss of relationship
and even death.
Some
translations of the verse above say, “too much wine,” or “in excess.” We know
Jesus turned the water into wine. It was His first miracle and it was at a
wedding celebration. In the Psalms, David reminds us that wine, “gladdens the
heart.” The Spirit guides and teaches and if we put God first, He will be our
focal point, above any substance or lust. Let’s be filled with the Spirit of
the Lord. Paul tells us the type of Spirit we have at our disposal.
For
the Spirit God gave us is not one of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7
The
Spirit gives us His love. He gives us His power. And He gives us a sound mind,
a self-disciplined mind. He doesn’t want us out of control, killing those
precious brain cells He has given us. The lusts of our flesh that make us feel
good and powerful can often lead us down the wrong path. Ask the Spirit to keep
you strong and filled, so there is room for nothing destructive. We only have
this very short life to live. Pray for those we love suffering from addictions
of any kind for their healing and for hope.
Jesus,We see the repercussions of abuse in all of its
forms. Help those we love to be filled with Your powerful, loving and
disciplined Spirit.
Amen
