Bible Characters and You/Peter

Peter’s personality remained volatile, even after choosing to follow Jesus. He was impulsive, emotional, and outspoken. In fact, when Peter saw Jesus walking on the water to meet them in the boat, he asked Jesus to allow him to come.

     Let’s follow the story:

“Lord, if it’s You,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to You on the water.” “Come”, He said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:28-31

I’m sure none of us have attempted to walk on water, but Jesus does give us courage to move out of our comfort zones. Have you ever stepped out in faith and faltered along the way? Have you doubted the path you’re on or given up on the strength and power of Jesus when you needed Him most? Peter’s faith faltered along the way. You may remember, Peter would be the the one to deny knowing Christ three times the night Jesus was arrested.

But time and time again, Peter came back and remained a trusted follower. Jesus forgave him and he forgives us. Peter would one day be hanged for his faith in Christ and asked to be hung upside down, believing he was not worthy to hang in the same way as his Lord. Find strength in the witness of Peter and when you are about to sink, don’t take your eyes, mind and heart off of Jesus.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:2

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen, for what is seen is temporary and what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18

Father,

Thank You for sharing the example of Your beloved disciple, Peter. Let us always look to You when we feel ourselves sinking, look to You for forgiveness, and to trust You through it all.

In Jesus name,

Amen
